Adult breakouts often sit lower on the face - and that pattern is worth mentioning

If your breakouts arrived in your thirties or forties rather than your teens, you have probably noticed they behave differently. Adult congestion often turns up along the jaw, chin and lower cheeks rather than across the forehead and nose, and it tends to be fewer, deeper spots that linger rather than a spread of surface bumps. That pattern is useful information, not a curiosity.

Why the pattern matters more than the count

Skin is assessed, not guessed at. Where breakouts sit, how deep they sit and how long they take to settle all shape what is suitable for you. Two people can arrive with the same number of spots and need quite different plans - one because the congestion is superficial and recent, the other because it is deeper and long-standing.

It is also worth separating what is active now from what has been left behind. Marks, uneven texture and pigmentation after a breakout settles are a different stage of the same story, and they are not treated the same way as skin that is still breaking out.

What that means for at-home care

The common instinct is to escalate: stronger actives, more scrubbing, more drying. Adult skin is usually less tolerant of that than teenage skin was, and a stripped barrier can make the whole face look worse while the breakouts carry on regardless. Consistency does more here than intensity.

Where in-clinic care fits

Depending on your skin, options at NEA may include medical-grade chemical peels to clarify the complexion, or SkinPen skin needling to support the appearance of marks and texture once things have calmed. Which one, at what strength and in what order depends entirely on what your skin is doing when Natalie looks at it - alongside home care suited to you.

If your acne and breakouts have changed with age and your old routine is no longer working, bring the pattern with you. When it flares, where it sits and what you have already tried gives Natalie, RN, a far better starting point than a photo ever will.
